No, I think that being a pastor or priest doesn’t automatically free one from problems and from the genetic disposition some people carry for addiction.
Everyone likes to poke fun at clergy on here, that they’re all pedophiles, rich, etc., and there are bad apples, for sure. But I’ve known pastors who got out of bed at 2 a.m. to sit with a family whose child was killed in a car accident; who had to break the news to a woman that her husband and only child were killed (and the husband was the pastor’s good friend). I’ve known a pastor who conducted a funeral service for a church member they loved, and then hid their grief to go conduct a wedding service and tried to be happy for the bridal couple.
Pastors and priests are all expected to be 35 years old with 60 years of clergy experience, to have PhDs in theology but talk like the good ol’ boy down the street, have perfect families but be on call 24 hours a day, always have impeccable homes and wardrobes and live on peasant’s wages (except for pastors of megachurches).
I’m only surprised more of them don’t get drunk.
